Description
The glassworks established in 1760 by Joseph Sowerby in Gateshead became, in the mid nineteenth century, the first factory in Britain devoted to making pressed glass items. By 1882 the Sowerby’s Ellison Glassworks, with about 1000 employees, was one of the largest in the world. Sowerby produced table and domestic items and various novelty products. In the 1920’s they produced Carnival glass in a variety of colours and in the 1930’s they were producing Art Deco items including table centres in pastel shades such as amber and green. The business declined in the 1950’s and eventually closed in 1972.
